Great question by a parent!!

Hi Ms. Hayden.  I was looking at your website and I have a question about the Homework Rubric.  One of the attributes of a "3" is the student has written the paper  in cursive.  The other points (2, 1, and 0) do not mention the paper having been written in cursive.  If a student doesn't write in cursive, will that automatically keep them from getting a "3"?  Thank you for the clarification.

The students may also type the paper on the computer. I am offering extra points for learning new skills. I know cursive and typing take longer for most sixth graders. I am encouraging these skills for students to be able to write their signature and read older documents, and learn how to type reports for upcoming projects.
These extra points help them, if they do badly on a test or miss a homework.
The grades for the point system are: 0=0=F= turn in
                                                            1=50%=F= redo for 100%
                                                            2=100%=A
3=150%=A student learned a new skill/put in extra time.

I also give homework passes for doing an extra good job in class, random act of kindness, and/or award for listening and following directions.
The home work pass is worth 100% or 2 on a homework learning assignment. Also , if you have an emergency( sick, emergency room visit, some one else in the family was sick) at home, please write me a note explaining and I can give the student more time. Things do happen, but hopefully not too many times.
Thank you for asking.

Finally!!!

I have had trouble posting to my blog. I can't get there from my school computer. So finally!!!!!! I have made it in to post. Please forgive me for not keeping you informed!!
The students are starting to settle in to the rituals and routines. They are understanding locker combinations and which supplies go where.
They still seem to think everything in the world goes into their backpack to carry around all day. We are trying to get them to understand locker times and what not to carry all day.
I have also put a cursive writing poster on my wall. I also have practice sheets for learning how to write your letters in cursive. Most of the students can read cursive and are moving right along.
They have also set up the student journal of World History and Reading.

Reading-
The students have been having fun playing word games and using context clues to solve the meaning of Latin words.
The books the student will be reading this quarter are:
Call it Courage- Armstrong Sperry
My Side of the Mountain- Jean Craighead George
Inside out and back again-n Thanhha Lai
Quarantine: the Loner- Lex Thomas

I have ten copies Call it courage, 30 copies of My side of the Mountain, 3 copies of inside out and none of Quarantine: the Loner.
I have found all of the books at my site for my Nook.
I have been to Chamberline's Bookmine to try to find the books. I would appreciate it if you see the books please buy one for your student. I will continue on my search.

 World History-
We have discussed primary and secondary sources. Most students brought in an artifact about them to share with the class. We will start having more home Learning assignments.
Currently, we have set up our journals and are underway. The students need to bring their World History books to school on class day.
Here are the current assignments:

World History and Reading Enrichment

Welcome to  Julia E. Landon!! We are glad to have you.
Thank you to parents who sent in wish list items!! Tissues is something we always needs!!~ Hand sanitizer, paper, hand wipes are great!! WoW! and colored markers for the board. Thank you.
The group I saw from 1-4 appeared to be surviving. The first two weeks of Middle School are hard for mast students. It takes them a while to adjust to  many new things, people, teachers, and places.
I will post on my board and a notepad the work we will do every day. The students need to copy this to their planners so you will also know what is going on in class.
The World History  pre-test will be given this week. according to the schedule it will start on Tuesday and end on Wednesday. However, there is a possibility this test could be moved back a day.
The students have also been given rituals and routines. We have discussed them  in class and the students know my expectations.
Julia Landon College Preparatory & Leadership Development School

Rituals and Routines

1.  Enter the class:
·        and organize your books, supplies, and belongings on your desk.
·        be seated in your assigned seat.
·        and sharpen your pencil at this time.

2.  Always come to class prepared with books, paper, writing utensils, and homework.

3.  Homework will be listed on the board or on a large poster-size sheet in each class daily or as assigned.  Assignments should be written in your planner at the end of the class period.

4.  Make-up work can be found by looking at the homework sheet on the board or by asking the teacher or another student.

5.  If you need to speak or get out of your seat for any reason, please raise your hand and get permission.  This should only happen after the opening meeting for the class.

6.  If you need to leave the class you must get permission to do so.  Hall passes are a privilege and will only be granted when you are respectful and procedures are followed.  Ask the teacher and have the teacher sign your planner.

7.  If you need a pen/pencil, you may borrow one from your teacher or a classmate.

8.  All papers should have the following heading in the upper right hand corner of the notebook paper:
  • First and Last Name
  • Subject/Period #
  • Date
  • Assignment

9.  Dismissal:  Students shall remain in their seats until the teacher dismisses the class.

10.  Observe the county School Dress Code Policy.

11.  Remember that school starts at 8:10 a.m.  You are tardy at 8:11 a.m.  Be on time and in your seat for each class.

12.  Please keep your voice at a moderate level.  Loud talking and yelling in class or in the hallways will not be tolerated.

13.   Be respectful.  Remember to keep your hands to yourself.  Horseplay, punching, hitting, pushing, and fighting are not allowed and will not be tolerated.

Each student needs to have a composition book for World History and a spiral one for Enrichment Class. They will keep their work and notes in these books. You may check the notebooks to see how your student is doing in my class.
Here is the rubric for most class work and home work assignments:

Field trip and updates

We still need 20 parents for the Field Trip to World Of Nations. I can offer free tickets to get in but no meal ticket. The about 10 parents have turned in forms and many paid the $10.00 and will get meal tickets. The Field Trip is Thursday 2 May 2013. I have also ordered parking passes if you need  to meet us at the Metro Park.

The end of the year Field Trip is pending. Mr. G on Team B is working on this Field  Trip. The DCPS rules for Field Trips has changed and he is working on the packet. We estimate the ticket will be $ 85.00-90.00. This will include the bus, EPCOT ticket and meal ticket. Mr G. needs to know all of the parents interested in this trip ASAP. They must fill out a form and DCPS employees are very important to this process. If you are an employee at another school or office, we would like to have you go on the trip with us. These are new DCPS rules and we hope to be able to go on the trip June 6.
